Oasis Coffee & Tea in Corrales

Several weeks ago we had lunch at Oasis Coffee & Tea in Corrales.  The food was good, and the ambiance was really amazing.  The building is innocuous on the outside, but once inside the door, it's like being in an indoor garden.  Lush plants, sculpture and artwork are everywhere, and water features provide soothing sound and visual impact.  It's also part art gallery, with paintings by various artists that change periodically. I especially liked their creative use of screens interwoven with silk ivy garlands to divide the space into smaller seating areas.

Their calendar of events includes live music and wine tastings.  What's not to like?

Rasoi Indian Kitchen in Albuquerque

Sometimes a detour can have an unexpected benefit.  As we headed east on Central Avenue to the Nob Hill area, we discovered that the entire street is being repaved and we had to go on some side streets for a few blocks.  We turned back north on Yale Boulevard to get back on Central and found Rasoi Indian Kitchen.

Looks can be deceiving.  The building is rather innocuous on the outside, but step inside to find the interior magnificently decorated with rich paprika-colored walls and hanging panels of gauzy fabric reminiscent of the colors of the spices of India.

Given my choice of ethnic foods, I'll choose the flavors of India every time.  I had the vegetarian thali combination dinner.  Usually, I expect to receive smaller portions of a number of dishes, but these appeared to be full-size servings of two entrees, a large portion of jasmine rice, a pykora, raita, naan bread and a lovely mango custard.  This was preceded by a bowl of soup, salad, and papadum.  I have a healthy appetite, but it was too much even for me.  Fortunately, they gave me a take-home box for the leftovers.  All of it was absolutely delicious!

Thank goodness for detours.

"Beat up Depositor with Roll of Bills"--1909

From the Albuquerque Morning Journal, October 21, 1909, page 8:

"Washington, Oct. 20--Using a roll of bills as a weapon, Charles C. Glover, president of the Riggs National Bank, is charged with having attacked a depositor who called at the bank Monday.  The depositor, Emilio Jasselli, today brought suit for damages against Mr. Glover, asking $10,000 for the bodily and mental pain he suffered.  The cause for the trouble has not been made public."

In search of a mural artist--subject is Route 66

In our transition from being a "Victorian" to "historic" bed & breakfast, we plan to re-theme the guest room at the front of the house to Route 66.  It's particularly appropriate since the view from the sitting room is Central Avenue, which Route 66 followed through Albuquerque.  To accomplish this, we are now looking for a mural artist.  Anyone interested in submitting ideas and a bid can contact us at info@bottger.com.  If you know of a mural artist who may be interested, please forward the link to this post on to them.

This is a photo of the room as it is now.  The room is currently a very light caramel color with sage green trim and linens.  Our plan is to re-paint the walls a light robin's egg blue and paint the woodwork white.  The area where we'd like the mural is right over the bed where the framed picture is.  The drapery swag with bouquet would be gone, of course.  What we envision is a "map" of Route 66 through Albuquerque stretching about the width of that swag, with renditions of famous Route 66 landmarks in Albuquerque.

We plan to have this work done in August.  All bids and inquiries by artists are welcome!
